BRADENTON- Mauldin & Jenkins, a leading assurance and advisory firm, volunteered with
local schools this summer through the Dive into Reading program. Employees mentored rising
first, second, and third-grade students while they enjoyed a hot breakfast and practiced their
reading skills.
Dive into Reading started in 2017 when Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Ellenton invited elementary-
aged children from local schools to enjoy breakfast and practice their reading skills with a
mentor. The program’s main goal is to combat the “summer slide”, the tendency for students to
lose some of the academic progress they made during the school year and increase the reading
proficiency of the children involved. Since its inception, other local restaurants have joined the
program, all offering their restaurants to children and mentors during the summer.
Colby Green, an employee of the Bradenton office, shares what participating meant to him.
“Participating with Dive into Reading allowed me to connect with my community and make
reading fun for young students during the summertime,” Colby said. “I got the opportunity to
positively impact a child’s day and hopefully prepare them for school again in the fall!”
